Iso Propanol is a clear, colourless liquid with a characteristic alcoholic odour similar to acetone and a low boiling point. It is one of the most widely-used solvents in the world and is also used as a chemical intermediate. It is miscible with most solvents, including water.
Iso propanol (IPA) is produced by one of two methods: a two-step hydrogenation and hydrolysis of propylene using acid and water; or a one-step hydrogenation of propylene with an acid catalyst.

Applications of Iso Propanol
Iso propanol is used principally as a solvent and also as a feedstock for chemical syntheses. It is widely used in the manufacture of a wide range of commercial products.
Iso propanol is the key ingredient in rubbing alcohol, which is a solution made up of 70% iso propanol in water. It is used as a component of antifreeze, coolants and de-icing agents, pharmaceuticals, quick-drying oils and inks and many personal care products such as after-shave lotion and cosmetics; it is a solvent for gums, shellac, creosote, resins and essential oils; it is used as an antiseptic in hand lotions; it is found in a large number of everyday products such as paints, cleaners, disinfectants and polishers and is also used as a dehydrating agent and extractant.
Storage and Handling
Iso Propanol liquid and vapour is highly flammable and must be kept away from excessive heat and all sources of ignition. It should be stored in a cool placein vented containers away from strong oxidizing agents. In these conditions, it can be expected to remain stable and have a storage life of at least one year.
Exposure to iso propanol vapour may cause irritation to the eyes, nose and throat. Prolonged exposure may cause depression of the central nervous system. Ingestion of large amounts of the product may cause serious injury and even death. Appropriate precautions including good ventilation and the wearing of the necessary personal protective equipment such as protective gloves and clothing along with eye and face protection should be observed.
