Ethyl Di Glycol

Ethyl di glycol is a clear, colourless liquid with a mild but characteristic odour. Like other glycol ethers, it has a bi-functional nature, containing both ether and alcohol groups in the same molecule. It is fully miscible with water and a wide range of organic solvents such as alcohols, esters, ethers and ketones. It is this excellent miscibility which makes it a versatile solvent and coupling agent, offering excellent performance features in a wide range of applications.

Ethyl di glycol is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide and ethanol in the presence of a catalyst. The resulting product is refined by distillation to separate the unreacted alcohol and the mono and di ether glycols.

Applications of Ethyl Di Glycol

Ethyl di glycol is widely used in paints, wood stains and wood preservatives where it improves the gloss and flow of the products. It is used as an auxiliary agent in water-based liquid wax films for floors where it controls the rate of evaporation and promotes better spreading and levelling.

It is the preferred constituent in many brake fluids due to its low viscosity at low temperatures, high boiling point, low solidification point and low rate of rubber attack. It acts as a solvent in the printing and dyeing of textiles, and in both natural and synthetic resins. It is regularly used in printing inks, as a cleaning agent in offset printing, in Indian inks and ballpoint pastes. It is also formulated into pesticides, industrial cleaners and cosmetic products.

Storage and Handling

Ethyl di glycol should be stored in a tightly-closed container in a dry, well-ventilated place away from sources of ignition. As ethyl di glycol is hygroscopic, it should be stored under inert gas.

Handle in accordance with good industry practices for safety and hygiene, avoiding contact with skin and eyes and inhalation of vapour and mist. See product SDS for further information.
