Ethyl Methacrylate Suppliers
Ethyl methacrylate is a clear and colourless flammable liquid with a pungent odour which is slightly soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents. It is an acrylic ester used in the manufacture of polymersand as a starting material for a variety of syntheses.
Ethyl methacrylate is a reactive, flexible monomer which polymerizes readily with itself and other monomers to produce thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
Synonyms: 2-Methyl-2-propenoic acid ethyl ester; 2-methyl-2-propenoicacid,ethylester; 2-methyl-2-propenoicaciethylester; 2-Methylacrylic acid, ethyl ester; 2-methyl-prop-2-enoicacidethylester; 2-Propenoicacid,2-methyl-,ethylester; EMA; Ethyl 2-methacrylate
Applications of Ethyl Methacrylate Suppliers
Ethyl methacrylate is used in the manufacture of homopolymers and copolymers. It can be copolymerized with acrylic acid and its salts, esters, acrylamide, methacrylic acid, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, styrene, butadiene and unsaturated polyesters.
Ethyl methacrylate is used in a number of end products such as synthetic rubbers, resins and dispersions for paints, varnishes and inks, aqueous dispersions for textiles and leather, plastics, synthetic resins, oil additives and as an ingredient for artificial nails. It also has medical and dental applications, being used in prosthetics and orthopaedic cement.
Storage and Handling
Ethyl methacrylate is moderately toxic. Inhalation may cause irritation of the mucus membranes. Causes irritation of the mouth and stomach if ingested. The liquid is an irritant to eyes and skin. Proper safety precautions including ventilation and the wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment and eye goggles must be observed.
Ethyl methacrylate must contain a stabilizer and should be stored under air rather than inert gases to prevent polymerization. Storage temperature must not exceed 35°C. Provided these storage conditions are properly maintained, the product can be expected to remain stable for a period of one year.
The product must be stored, handled, distributed and disposed of in strict accordance with national laws and directives, as well as any applicable local regulations. Ensure the container is tightly closed. More detailed information is available in the brochure ‘SAFE HANDLING AND STORAGE OF ACRYLIC ESTERS’, from the European Basic Acrylic Monomers Manufacturers Association (EBAM).
