Trioctyl Trimellitate

Trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM) is a clear oily liquid with a very slight odour. It is a primary branched monomeric plasticizer for vinyl homopolymer and copolymer resins which has extremely low volatility. It is a speciality plasticizer which offers a number of advantages such as good extraction resistance, good plasticizer and resin compatibility, permanence, excellent performance at both high and low temperatures, offers good electrical resistance properties, resistance to chemical agents and to extraction by soapy water. In addition it is highly resistant to the influence of external influences such as sunlight and therefore does not yellow easily.

TOTM is an ester produced by reacting trimellitic acid with 2-ethyl hexanol. It has a high boiling point, is easy to process and has a long shelf life. It provides the desired changes to physical and mechanical properties without causing changes to the chemical structure of the polymer.

Synonyms: 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxyulicacid,tris(2-ethylhexyl)ester; 2-Ethylhexyl trimellitate; hatcol200; Kodaflex TOTM; monosizerw710l; morflex510; Palatinol TOTM, Tri(2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate; Tris (2-ethylhexyl) trimellitate; Trioctyl; Trimellitate tris (2-ethylhexyl) ester; Tris (2-ethylhexyl) benzenetricarboxylate

Applications of Trioctyl Trimellitate

Trioctyl trimellitate can be used in various plastic materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), chloroethylene copolymer, ethyl cellulose and polymethyl methylacrylate. TOTM is an excellent substitute for polyester polymeric plasticizers due to the improvements in processing it offers.

It is used in tools for applications requiring insulation gaskets, in internal electrical parts for the automotive industry, in flexible cable insulation materials and in the manufacturing of flexible PVC film, sheet and tape.

Storage and Handling

Trioctyl trimellitateshould be stored in tightly-closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from strong oxidizing agents. In recommended storage conditions it can be stored for periods of up to two years.

The material should be handled in accordance with good industry safety and hygiene practices. Relevant engineering controls including adequate ventilation should be implemented. Handle with gloves and avoid eye contact. Protective clothing may be required depending on recommendations from appropriate risk assessments. Respiratory protection is not normally required.
